Academy Ambassador: A Jump Start to College

Gabby-Overton High, IT Academy Ambassador

My name is Gabby C. and I am currently a Senior at Overton High School’s Academy of Information Technology.  My Academy has helped me tremendously in the past year. Not only has my academy allowed me to learn more in my projected career, but it also has given me the opportunity to make connections outside of my school. Last year I took part in an externship at our well-known Pencil Partner, Deloitte. I was recognized and pointed out from a few of the employees at Deloitte that I had previously seen while helping with the Freshman orientation. We were shown around the building and had the chance to see the IT department.

My academy has also given me the chance to earn college credit. This past summer I took part in a dual enrollment program with Nashville State Community College. The class was paid for by our Pencil Partner, Deloitte, which was a relief to me. I attended class every Tuesday and Thursday from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm for four weeks. The class focused on Adobe Photoshop and we practiced many skills in the program. The class gave me three hours of college credit that I will later use after I graduate from high school. The opportunity was very beneficial to me and now I assist other students who need help editing their pictures.

Next year I plan to go to a university in Georgia and major in Computer Programming with a minor in Graphic Design. The experiences that I am learning now are helping me to get ahead of my class and to give me a jump-start in my college career. I have enjoyed being apart of the IT Academy and I look forward to taking part in our various activities this year.
