The Academies of Nashville at Pearl-Cohn High School

Pearl-Cohn High School is the first entertainment magnet high school in the United States. The Academies at Pearl-Cohn focus on production and management in the entertainment field through partnerships with Nashville’s dynamic music and tourism industries. On March 8, 2012, Warner Music Nashville president and CEO John Esposito and Nashville Mayor Karl Dean announced the creation of the first high school student-run music label in the United States at Pearl-Cohn High School.

Academy of Entertainment Communication

People working in the music recording industry manufacture, design, install, integrate, operate and repair the equipment of audiovisual communications. They are involved in the presentation of sound, video and data to groups in venues such as corporate boardrooms, hotels, convention centers, classrooms, theme parks, stadiums, and recording studios. Students will develop the technical skills to operate the equipment for producing a finished audio product in live performance and studio recordings. Music business training is an integral part of this field. Students will be exposed to units of study that allow them to focus on the business realities of the music industry. Students will learn about writer/publisher contracts, production contracts, radio promotion, music distribution, and copyright law.

Pathways:

Audio Engineering and Audio Technology:

Students will develop the technical skills to produce a finished audio recording or facilitate live sound using ProTools recording software, mixing console, microphones, and other outboard technology.

Radio Production

Students will learn to operate equipment that is used at major radio stations across the nation and receive DJ, sports broadcasting, and news/talk training.

Songwriting

Students will learn the principles of lyric and melody composition. They will also learn the history of popular/commercial music, music theory, demo recording, and the basics of copyright law.

Television Production/Broadcasting

Students learn to research, write, and deliver programming for on-air broadcasts. They also receive hands-on experience using equipment on par with local video production companies and broadcast television stations.

Academy of Entertainment Management

Entertainment management entails a wide variety of activities. Students in the Academy of Entertainment Management learn how to support various aspects of the entertainment industry through marketing, media communications, technology, and style design. Marketing and communications employees plan, coordinate, and implement marketing strategies, advertising, promotion, and public relations activities. Because of the importance and high visibility of their jobs, these individuals often are prime candidates for advancement. People with careers in personal care services assist clients with their personal appearance, including developing a unique style and image and assisting in personal fitness goals. Careers in Web design and multimedia management involve the design, development, and maintenance of Web servers and sites.

Marketing Communication

Students create marketing plans, set up social media pages, and design interactive marketing and promotional Web sites.

Media Publishing

Students manage all facets of copyright administration (licensing and royalty collection) and exploitation for recordings, magazines, books, films, and newspapers. They also learn how talent is identified and developed, along with the mechanics to submit songs for television commercials and feature films.

Recording Industry

Students learn about recording industry careers such as promotion, marketing, artists and repertoire, sales, distribution, artist and venue management, touring, and financial management. Students will learn the structures and processes involved in developing a recording artist’s career.

Personal Care Services – Stylist & Image Consulting

Students learn various aspects of style and image consultation to prepare for careers as make-up artists, stylists, platform artists, and other cosmetology-related fields.
